Sound Installation

A sound installation based on “surface sounds”, that were recorded in Malkastenpark in Düsseldorf. By taking walks through the park while dragging metal or cardboard boxes behind me, I performed a new form of sound walk. The boxes ground over gravel and leaves, slid through meadows, moved across the surface of a pond, and gently scratched along the branches of trees.

The interactions between the boxes and the surfaces of the natural surroundings created sounds that were recorded by small microphones placed inside the boxes. The recorded sounds were then arranged into a composition and played them back through the same boxes in which they had originally been recorded.

With the help of transducers, the four boxes were transformed into speakers and suspended from a mystical tree. Standing beneath the tree, the audience could listen to the surface sounds played back through the metal and cardboard boxes and immerse themselves in a multichannel listening experience.
